Director Zhang Yimou is known for his unique artistic conceptualization of Asian society in his movies and for his significant contributions to the development of world culture and art.
Chairman Enkhtuvshin has contributed greatly to the exchange between Korea and Mongolia in education, joint research activities and improvement in friendly relationships between the countries.

Dankook University granted honorary doctoral degrees to world famous director Zhang Yimou (張藝謀) and to Batbold Enkhtuvshin, Chairman of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Zhang received his honorary doctoral degree at Beomjeong Grand Hall on Oct 31, while Enkhtuvshin received his honorary doctoral degree at Liberal Arts Small Theater on Nov 1.

Zhang began to receive attention from the world when his debut film, Red Sorghum (1988) won the Golden Bear Prize (Grand Prize) at the Berlin International Film Festival after he graduated from Beijing Film School in 1982. After that, he produced films like Raise the Red Lantern (1991, won Leon d'Argento at the 48th Venice Film Festival), The Story of Qui Ju (1992, won Leon d'Oro at the 49th Venice Film Festival), and The Lover (2004, won 'Best Director' prize at the 39th National Society of Film Critics). Also, he was the main coordinator of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Zhang has served as an endowed professor emeritus at Dankook University since 2009. Along with Zhang, DKU has other famous Chinese names on its faculty list, including Mo Yan, a Nobel Prize winner and novelist working as an invited professor, and Liu Zaifu, a great scholar of China and a representative literature critic serving as an endowed professor emeritus.

Chairman Batbold Enkhtuvshin of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences established a nomadic culture institute and has been serving as director of the institute. Also, he has served as president of the Asian Science Committee through his world acknowledged research activities. In 2000, he received acknowledgement from UNESCO World Culture Research Committee for his contributions to the development of world science with his topic “Changes in Asian Nomadic Culture.” Also, while he served as vice president of the National Council for Higher Education, Science and Technology, he contributed to the development of science education as a major force for establishing study areas in science and technology in Mongolian universities while he directly participated in about 10 professional universities’ establishment events and had great influence on promoting professional careers of scholars. The Mongolian government has evaluated his work in great regard and granted an academic medal to him, bestowing the title ‘Academician,’ which is the highest honor for a researcher.

Dankook University decided to grant Director Zhang an honorary Ph.D. in Literature, acknowledging his devotion to the development of world culture and art through his unique imaging of Eastern philosophy and Asian thoughts in his world-renowned movie productions. Furthermore, Dankook University decided to grant Enhktuvshin an honorary Ph.D. in Education, as he is not only greatly recognized in Mongolia and other countries around the world for his educational works and efforts but also because he has greatly contributed to the joint research activities and the improvement of friendly relations between Korea and Mongolia.
