Park Tae-hwan won 2 silver medals in the London Olympics;
Dankook University’s support groups were with him to cheer him on.

“Marine Boy” Park Tae-hwan (Master’s Candidate, Dankook University), finished his pursuit for the medal in the London Olympics.

Park won silver medals in the Men’s Freestyle 400m and 200m swimming events in the 2012 London Olympics.

There were some frustrations during the games. The prospects for Park’s taking the gold were very high, but he was disqualified during the preliminaries in the 400m Freestyle for a false start, but then the decision was reversed. He went through the ups and downs of the incident and failed to win the gold medal. However, he won 2 silver medals even with this hardship and showed a truly world class performance. He also placed 4th in the 1500m race and has honored the name of our country and our university.

Particularly, this Olympics was more memorable because many students and members of the university community were there.

Our university gathered a supporting group to cheer Park on every time his race was on.

In the early morning for Park’s final race in the 400m, 200m and 1500m, current students and members of the university gathered together to cheer for him.

The university rented out a local theater (Jukjeon CGV) at midnight and broadcast Park’s games. Although it was very late at night more than 200 people were gathered to cheer for him.

The participants of the supporting event clapped and cheered for Park’s fearless race although he did not win the gold. This supporting event was later broadcasted on the news of major broadcasting systems like KBS, MBC, SBS YTN and Channel A.

A support poster was made with messages received from Dankook University’s Facebook page, and a video cheering for Park Tae-hwan was made by the student ambassador group “Wing Dandae”. Although some sad feelings were felt during the London Olympics, Park’s effort and passion, unyielding spirit and togetherness with DKU students made the time more special for everyone.
