The RNA Molecular Biology Research Center (National Research Lab) led by Professor Jeong Sun-joo (Department of Molecular Biology, BK21 Project Leader) has found a new principle of occurrence in colorectal cancer. The team has discovered that by adding a certain protein to the RNA of COX-2 (Cyclooxygenrase-2), which is the gene that leads to the formation of colorectal cancer, will increase the level COX-2 protein and will accelerate creation of the cancer cells. This finding has shown internationally for the first time that creation and spreading of cancer cells may be regulated through certain RNA. Also the finding is especially significant in that it has uncovered the creation principle of the cancer cell. The research results were published in the August edition of Nucleic Acids Research, which is a prestigious journal in molecular biology. The RNA substance used in the research is also registered as a U.S. patent. “This research presents new possibilities in finding the principles of creation in cancer cells,” said Professor Jeong. “I expect it will have a major impact on cancer medicines in the future.” ▶ Picture Description: Principle of colorectal cancer occurrence In the process of transformation from a normal to a cancer cell, β-catenin protein combines to COX-2 mRNA β-catenin by recognizing the structure and sequence of the RNA. Then HuR protein, which controls the creation of RNA, is drawn out to increase the level of COX-2 protein to promote the creation of cancer cells. In particular, post-graduate students actively participated in the research, which has attracted outside attention. In May, the first author, Kim In-ae (Ph.D., Department of Molecular Biology), was awarded Best Research Award, which is given to the person with the most excellent research paper by Korea’s largest academic society for Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - the Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In addition, the first co-author Kwak Ho-yoon (Ph.D., Department of Molecular Biology) received the Best Publication Award in the Korea Cellular Biology Society in June and the Excellent Poster Award from the Association of Korean Geoscience Societies, RNA Subcommittee Society and Korea Nuclear Acid Society in July. Prof. Jeong said the results are the fruits of diligently performing many years of theoretical and experimental studies from the undergraduate level and accumulated experience from various studies including BK21. ▶ Research team that discovered the principle of colorectal cancer occurrence (From the left: Kwak Ho-yoon, Prof. Jeong Sun-ju, Kim In-ae)

Good news came from London thanks to a proud Dankook student. Kim Hyun-woo (Dankook University, Master’s candidate, College of Sports Science) won the gold medal 2-0 in the final match against Hungary’s Tamas Lorincz in the Greco-Roman 66kg class of men’s wrestling in the 2012 London Olympics. Kim’s right eye was badly injured during his matches before the finals as he kept getting bashed by his opponents. However, his injury did not deter him from keeping up his fighting will and winning the honorable gold medal. The god medal was more meaningful since it had been 8 years since Korea’s wrestling team had won the gold. At the age of 14, while in Pyoungwon Middle School, his wrestling coach recommended that Kim seek a professional career, and Kim became a rising star after winning the gold medal in the 2006 Asia Junior Championships and silver medal in the World Junior Championships. After joining the adult team, he won the Asia Senior Championships, took the bronze in the 2011 World Championship and then the gold medal in the Pre-Olympics last December. He graduated from Kyungnam University and entered Dankook University’s Graduate School of Sports Science. International certification for providing the “Best Health Care Service” Dankook University Hospital (Director, Hospital Park Woo-sung) received the first JCI Certification among senior general hospitals in Korea’s central region. JCI Certification is a certification program by JCI (Joint Commission International), America’s largest clinic certification organization, collaborating with the WHO, to certify the world’s medical centers for providing internationally standardized medical services. In particular, compared with domestic medical certification which evaluates 400 items, the JCI Certification process is very strict as it evaluates 1,200 items from hospital visits to the discharge process, and grants its certification only to those satisfying 90% of the items. Currently, along with Johns Hopkins University Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, only 400 or so institutions in 53 countries have received the JCI Certification. In Korea, starting with Yonsei Severance Hospital, 10 senior general hospitals have received the certification, and after Chonnam Natinal University Hospital and Busan University Hospital, Dankook University Hospital is the third to get JCI Certification outside of the Seoul metropolitan area. Through this JCI Certification, Dankook University Hospital has been formally recognized for its international level of medical services and hopes to receive more foreign patients living in Korea and to attract medical tourists. Currently Dankook University Hospital is collaborating with the 18th Medical Command of the U.S. Eighth Army, and the number of foreign patients reached 7,500 last year, showing a steady increase over the years. Park Woo-sung, Hospital Director, said that this first JCI Certification in the central region recognizes that Dankook University Hospital provides an international level of medical services with safety and excellence. Also, he promised to work toward developing the practice and facilities to meet the international level and establish a “patient-oriented hospital.”

Prof. Lee Sung-wook and Team Develop Inhibiting Substance for Liver Metastasis of Colorectal Cancer Found ways to effectively track and control the metastasis of colorectal cancer. Effects proven through animal testing, results published in the prestigious journal in human digestive system, Gastroenterology. Professor Lee Sung-wook (Department of Molecular Biology) and his research team developed a new substance which could effectively track and control the metastasis of cancer cells to the liver, which is one of the major reasons for death among colorectal patients. “Nucleic Acid Aptamer” developed by Lee’s team is a substance that can prove the principle in which carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) that sparks the metastasis to the liver is revealed and effectively controlled. Professor Lee proved though animal testing that Nucleic Acid Aptamer is combined with certain parts of the CEA and prevents the metastasis of cancer cells to the liver. The research results were published in the July edition (July 1) of Gastroenterology, which is the most prestigious journal for digestive system studies. Also, its importance has been recognized and selected as the most noteworthy research which was individually introduced on the website. In addition, Korea’s major Bio Science website, BRIC, introduced the research results in the “Proud Korean” section which highlights Korean scientists’ publications in prestigious international journals. Colorectal cancer is one of the world's most prevalent cancers, and Korea ranks 4th globally in colorectal cancer incidents. Colorectal cancer can be confirmed with high CEA level, which is the cancer marker. If there are excessive CEA, then it is common to experience accelerated metastasis of cancer cells to the liver. A major cause of death for colorectal cancer patients is metastasis to the liver, which occurs in 2 to 7 out of 10 people. The probability of relapse is high, and prognosis is not good. Professor Lee is the first to develop a Nucleic Acid Aptamer that combines with certain parts of CEA that are major factors in liver metastasis, and by regulating this, Lee’s team found ways to effectively control spreading to liver. This substance not only prevents the colorectal cancer cells from spreading to liver but also tracks the liver metastasis of cancer cells by leading to extinction of the cells, opening a new way to diagnose and also cure the disease. Nucleic Acid Aptamer is a biopolymer substance made of Nucleic Acid and has similar characteristics with antibodies, so it can easily combine with target cells. Since it can easily synthesize and transform like low molecular weight chemicals, mass production is possible according to purpose. With high transmittance to the cancer cell tissue and low incidences of infection or low level of toxins, it is gaining attention as a next-generation new drug substance. “The research results proved that CEA is the major factor accelerating the spread of cancer cells to the liver,” said Professor Lee. “With development of the Nucleic Acid Aptamer, we were able to present the transformation process and environment in which cancer cells spread to the liver. This will eventually lower the death rate due to colorectal cancer.” Ways to control spreading of colorectal cancer by Nucleic Acid Aptamer targeting CEA Nucleic Acid Aptamer is combined to the “PELPK” of the CEA that spreads cancer cells to the liver and undermines the initial stage of metastasis by CEA, fundamentally preventing the spread of cancer.

Hello, Dankook! Welcome. One of our alumni, Oh Seung-hwan (Class of ‘01, College of Sports Science) of Samsung Lions achieved the all-time save record (228 saves) in Korean Professional Baseball this season. What is a save? It is a stat given to the pitcher who finishes a winning game in baseball. It is a very hard stat to get since the pitcher’s performance has to be backed by the game situation. We could not just sit by when our alumnus achieved such a great record! So we went to meet our alumnus, Oh Seung-hwan We were a little early for our appointment and were waiting! When from far away came Lee Byung-kyu of the LG Twins (Class of ‘93) Lee also graduated from our University. He played in the Japanese Professional Baseball League, and last June, he set a remarkable record of 2,000 hits all-time in Korean and Japanese baseball. He promised that our cheers would get him another hit. We decided to interview Lee Byung-kyu in the near future. And a little later, we finally went onto the playing field to meet Oh Seung-hwan. After the LG Twins’ practice, the Samsung Lions were practicing. Many fans were gathered, watching the players practice before the game. We looked around the baseball stadium until the practice ended. And finally! After the practice he came to meet us for the interview. So the interview started. DKUPR : Hello! So nice to meet you! Oh : Yes! Nice to meet you! DKUPR : You have set a new record for all-time saves. Congratulations! How do you feel? Oh : I recorded 228 saves, and I am really happy about that. However, to the contrary, I think this is a new start. I will do my best for our team’s victory. DKUPR : : I want to ask you about baseball. Your nickname is Stone Buddha. Did you know that? Oh : Yes, I did. DKUPR : You are always expressionless when you get on the mound. Do you get nervous at all? Oh : Yes, I do get nervous. But I don’t keep a poker face on the mound. I try to do as I practiced even when I’m nervous. DKUPR : Do you have any mind controlling method of your own before going up? (Facebook Park Joo-yeon) Oh : No, not really. Since I am always under pressure on the mound, I don’t have any time for something like that. I only focus on each pitch. DKUPR : Ok. I want to know about your college life. The former Coach Kang Moon-gil said you were a very sincere player who did not stop practicing. How do you picture yourself when you think of “Oh Seung-hawn in College?” Oh : I really appreciate the coach for his compliments. I worked hard every day during college… All I can remember was practicing hard every day. DKUPR : I think your sincerely has made who you are now. What does Dankook University mean to you? Oh : It set the initial stage for today’s Oh Seung-hwan of the Samsung Lions. Everything that I did during my college days has made me stronger. DKUPR : I want to ask you some fun questions. Were you a campus couple in college? (Facebook Yoon Sung-wook) Oh : Yes….. I was. DKUPR : Wow! You were? Oh : Yes, for a little while. DKUPR : Once? Oh : Yes. DKUPR : Wow… okay. This person seems to be a fan of the other team. What do you think about ruining the moment of the end of the ninth inning with two outs? (Facebook Park Byung-joon) (Note: Generally two outs at the end of the ninth inning is the end of the baseball game. Oh Seung-hwan has always defended his team from dramatic turn-arounds) Oh : It would be a delight to Samsung Lions fans! DKUPR : Yes, it is. The next question is about you and your classmate Yoon Yo-sup (formerly Yoon Sang-kyun) of the LG Twins. Who was more popular among girls during college? (Twitter Lee Kang-bok) Oh : Well… I am not sure who was more popular in what way. DKUPR : Ha ha. Ok. Oh : Sang-kyun was more popular. I… always hung around with him… anyway he was more popular. DKUPR : Last but not least, could you say something to Dankook Alumni and Dankook’s baseball team? Oh : I graduated from Dankook university and am getting an interview after setting the record. I appreciate your support, and I will not forget that I am a member of the Dankook community and to do my best. Thank you. We were a little worried because the interview took place just an hour before the game, but he was very friendly during the interview. He may look a little cold and unfriendly on TV, but the real Oh Seung-hwan spoke out and smiled a lot. It was a heart thumping interview with Oh Seung-hwan! We wanted to talk more, but we had to go after wishing him good luck! We went to our seats near the third base as the game was about to start. (Lee Byung-kyu, we are sorry. We didn’t know we would meet you today. We said we’ll cheer for LG… but we already bought tickets for Samsung!) Many fans came to the game on a week day. We could feel the passion for baseball. With remarkable plays by the pitchers of both teams, the score was still 0:0, but the Samsung Lions scored 2 points each in the fifth and seventh innings, getting ahead of the game with 4:0. The LG Twins scored a point in the eighth inning, which made the situation right for a save. (There are many situations for recording a save, but generally a 3 point lead in the game meets the criteria) We were worried that Oh Seung-hwan might not play today, but he took the mound in the ninth inning! Samsung fans in the third base area sang Oh’s song “SAVE US, Oh Seung-hwan,” with rewritten lyrics to the tune of the theme song from the animation “Lazenca Save Us.” He is the guardian angel of the Samsung Lions and Korea’s baseball. But the first batter was Lee Byung-kyu…. Oh no. What do you do? The result? Lee Byung-kyu hit a fly out foul over third base, and it was a relief for Oh Seung-hwan. Oh finished the game with a strike out and a foul fly out and added another save to his record making it 229 games. We were honored to be there when he was making the historical 229th save. Now, his saves will make a new record in Korea’s baseball history. Let’s all continue to give him a lot of support! [ Go To Dankook University’s Blog ]
