On June 27 an agreement was signed with Korea’s Marine Corps Headquarters

Dankook University has become the first university in Korea to introduce a Marine Corps Military Department.

Dankook University (President Hosung Chang) and Marine Corps Headquarters (Commanding Officer Lieutenant General Hoyun Lee) made an agreement to newly open the Marine Corps Military Department for development of elite marine corps generals at the main conference room of Cheonan Campus of Dankook University on June 27 (Wed) at 11am.

Following the agreement, Dankook University will newly open its Marine Corps Military Department and select a total of 30 students from the current year’s nonscheduled (early) and scheduled (regular) admissions. Dankook University will develop professional generals through military related education and is planning to allow double majors and minors in the department in order to open new career paths in military service for students.

Entering students will be supported with full tuition from the Marine Corps during their 4 years of study. Graduates will be commissioned as second lieutenants and serve as Marine Corps generals for 7 years. After that, they may continue to serve for longer terms or become military and security experts after discharge. Dankook University is planning to operate separate employment support programs for these discharged Marines.

Also, in consideration of the special characteristics of the Marine Corps, the school is planning to apply distinguishable education processes from existing military departments in other universities.
To accomplish this, Dankook University and the Marine Corps will engage in a military department operation meeting and arrange overall affairs related to this military department and its operation together. Outstanding, experienced Marine Corps will be invited as faculty for the department, instructors from the Marine corps will be invited as instructors and special faculty to manage students’ academic affairs, discipline, and military physical education.

In addition, Dankook University will build a research center for military studies and operate various businesses which may contribute to the development of military studies through basic research on military studies, developing teaching materials, opening symposiums. Also, it is planning to install a leadership center and operate leadership development education programs for active officers and reservists of the Marine Corps, students of military studies departments and elementary, middle, and high school students.

President Hosung Chang said that the school will actively support to develop outstanding generals with professionalism and contribute to the academic development of military studies by opening graduate and doctoral programs for military studies and military training programs in the future.

The Marine Corps also has established new plans for the launch of the Marine Corps Military Department to secure outstanding officers who will serve as generals, and an admissions seminar with 19 participating universities was held last March 6. The Marine Corps Military Department is characterized by its specialty of picking outstanding students and guarantees an employment rate near 100% after graduation, so competition among universities to secure the department was active. A total of 11 universities submitted applications for the department and through application evaluation and field inspection on the installation and operation plan for this military department from April 24 to June 4, Dankook University (Cheonan Campus) was selected as the winner.
