Dankook University’s School of Theater & Film’s ‘Jang Making Lorelei Day’ received the award for new musicals at the ‘10th Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF)’ held at the Daegu Opera House last July.

At the ‘10th DIMF’ hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Dankook University School of Theater and Film producers for ‘Jang Making Lorelei Day’ were recognized for how they turned the story of how a Korean family producing jang, traditional Korean fermented condiments, for 100 years try to protect their tradition into a heartwarming and humorous tale.

The cast and crew of ‘Jang Making Lorelei Day’ displayed originality and passion. During the 100 minutes including intermission, they brought tears and laughter to the audience, touching the hearts of viewers in a way that major large-scale musicals cannot. The stage set with traditional Korean tiled roofs, faded doorways, persimmon trees in the yard and jangdokdae (Korean traditional jars for condiments and sauces) may not be glamorous, but drew the audience into Korean sentiment and memories of the past.

‘Jang Making Lorelei Day’ is especially attracting attention as it was created during the ‘New musical production and practice’ class that was first set up for musical majors in the School of Theater and Film in 2012. The musical was the result of the hard-working efforts of the entire cast and crew, including producer Geum-jeong Yoon (class of 2014) and composer Jihyun Chung (class of 2015) to create a new musical that can be put on stages beyond the school campus.
