DKU Holds 65th Anniversary Celebration Including Memorial Service, Statue Unveiling, Athletic Meet and Concert for Local Residents

On Friday, November 2, 2012, various events, such as a university founding commemoration ceremony, unveiling ceremony for statues of the university founders, intramural athletic meet, and concert were held around campus.

Various events in celebration of the 65th anniversary of Dankook University’s establishment were held here and there on both campuses, starting with a memorial ceremony for Madam Hyedang Cho Huijae at Nanpa Music Hall. Other events included a ceremony commemorating the founding of the university, statue unveiling ceremonies, final competitions between winners of the Jukjeon-Cheonan Campus Sports Festivals, and a concert with local residents.

On November 2, 2012 at 9:30am, the memorial ceremony for Madam Hyedang Cho Huijae was held in the Recital Hall on the 3rd floor of Nanpa Music Hall. Mrs. Cho passed away on Nov 3, 1947, the same year of the founding of Dankook University. The event was held to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the university’s founding and to remember Mrs. Cho’s noble mind on the 65th anniversary of her passing.

The ceremony at Nanpa Music Hall continued at 10am with a celebration of the university’s founding attended by 700 faculty members from both campuses, the university hospital and affiliated middle/high school, as well as by DKU President Chang Ho-sung, former president Chang Choong-sik and Chairman of the Board Kim Hak-joon.

During the ceremony, special recognition was given to faculty members who have been with the university and affiliated institutions for 30 years or more and for faculty members displaying outstanding performance, and a ceremonial supper and commemoration speeches by President Chang and Chairman Kim followed.

“The university has continued to grow regardless of many changes and difficulties through the efforts of faculty members,” said President Chang during his keynote speech. “Let’s lead Dankook University to open a new era by reflecting on the past 65 years.”

“Let’s make efforts to build a brighter future for Dankook University by remembering our motto of national salvation, independence, self-reliance,” said Chairman Kim.

Then, at 11am, the unveiling ceremony for new statues of the Dankook University founders took place at the Waterfall Park in front of Beomjeong Hall in Jukjeon Campus. University faculty and staff, 170 thousand alumni and philanthropists raised funds to erect the new statues, which will remind onlookers of the Dankook University motto of national salvation, independence and self-reliance.

Following the statue unveiling ceremony in Jukjeon Campus, another statue unveiling ceremony also commemorating Mr. Beomjeong Chang Hyong and Madam Hyedang Cho Huijae took place in Cheonan Campus on the same day at 2pm.

From 3pm, an inter-campus athletic meet was held between the winners of Jukjeon and Cheonan Campus’ respective Sports Festival competitions. Each Campus’ athletes competed with pride in events like basketball, soccer, tug of war, relay races, etc. In the end, Jukjeon Campus won with a slight overall point difference of 700 to 680 over Cheonan Campus.

“I am happy that students of both campuses could come together and cooperate through this athletic event,” said Jukjeon Campus Vice President Kang Jae-chul. “Although the inter-campus athletic meet was held in Jukjeon this year, it will take place at Cheonan Campus next year celebrating the 35th anniversary of Cheonan Campus.”

Later, at 6pm, the grand finale, ‘Concert with Local Residents’ took place at the amphitheater to share the celebration of Dankook’s 65th anniversary. Not only university faculty and staff members but also local residents attended the event and recognized the fact that our school is developing along with the local community. Students and faculty from the Department of Dance and Department of Korean Traditional Music, as well as famous singers including 2PM, ERU and Beige performed at the concert heating the fall night with students and residents.
