Systematic intellectual property education begins for the students of the College of Engineering

Dankook University was selected as a pioneer university for the 2nd round of Intellectual Property Education Support sponsored by the Korean Intellectual Property Office. A total of 1.1 billion won of funding including 750 million won of government subsidies for the upcoming 5 years will be input into the program.

The Intellectual Property Education Pioneer University Project is a government supported project to build university education based on popularizing knowledge of intellectual property, and a total of 3 universities including DKU, Seoul National University and Pukyong National University were selected this year. In particular, DKU’s business plan was selected as the best among those submitted by the 3 universities, and it was also selected as a standard for all university business plans.

Our university is planning to make intellectual property education compulsory for all students of the College of Engineering, and to popularize interest in intellectual property through the addition of 56 classes, thus expanding intellectual property education in 5 major departments outside of engineering. Also, DKU plans to provide higher intellectual property education to the students by hiring professors specifically for their expertise in intellectual property.

Through this, DKU will realize its mission of developing global outstanding individuals with intellectual property strength, an advanced education system for intellectual property, and for popularization of intellectual property.

Also, to foster talented individuals who have strength in intellectual property, the university will encourage students to participate in creative innovation competitions and in the D2B Design Fair so that they can develop creativity and understand the importance of intellectual property protection while learning to manage intellectual property through participation in campus-wide patent strategy competitions. In addition, DKU plans to introduce intensive law courses and send students to the programs of international organizations to train students in global intellectual property development and protection.

To establish a specialized educational system for intellectual property, the university plans to introduce intellectual property education into general education courses while linking intellectual property education to designing courses, providing intellectual property courses for non-engineering students and introducing intellectual property education to medical/bio/design courses, as well as opening intensive law courses.

Also, to foster intellectual property education in Gyeonggio and Chunchung Provinces, where venture groups are active, Dankook University will sign an intellectual property exchange agreement with local self-governing bodies and execute intellectual property education activities for local corporations with local self governing bodies. Also, DKU plans to develop academic programs in conjunction with the Korea Intellectual Property Education Research Society.
