Lecture Room Named in Memory of Late Lieutenant Seo Jung-woo, Victim of Yeonpyeong Island Bombing Incident
In Remembrance of 3rd Anniversary of Yeonpyeong Island Bombing Incident, Signboard Unveiling Ceremony and Remembrance Ceremony for Deceased Held Simultaneously
In remembrance of the 3rd anniversary of North Korea’s bombing of Yeongpyeong Island, the ‘Seo Jung-woo Lecture Room’ signboard unveiling ceremony and memorial event was held at Cheonan Campus at 4pm on November 22.
At this event, room 316 of Public Administration and Social Welfare Hall, where the late Lieutenant Seo Jung-woo’s junior colleagues take classes, received its new name of ‘Seo Jung-woo Lecture Room.’
At the signboard unveiling ceremony for the room, university related personnel including President Chang Ho-sung and students, as well as parents and families of the deceased were in attendance.
“As a remembrance of deceased Lieutenant Seo’s soul and his patriotism and sacrifice, I declared the title ‘Seo Jung-woo Lecture Room,’ hoping all university members might remember him for a long time,” said Yoo Hong-rim, Dean of the College of Public Administration and Social Welfare.
Following the signboard unveiling ceremony, a memorial service took place in front of the ‘Deceased Lieutenant Seo Jung-woo Memorial Stone’ located at the College of Public Administration and Social Welfare. The memorial service included silent prayer, a memorial speech by the Dean of the College of Public Administration and Social Welfare, a memorial poetry reading, greetings from the deceased’s family and a flower dedication
Lieutenant Seo entered Dankook University Cheonan Campus Department of Law in 2008 and volunteered for the 1088th Class Korean Marine Corps in the beginning of 2009 after finishing his 1st year in university. On November 23, 2010 he died in battle from bombs launched on Yeonpyeong Island by North Korea. On November 26, he was promoted to the Hwarang Order of Military Merit, and on the 27th, he was buried in Daejeon National Cemetery.
On November 23, 2011, Dankook University erected a memorial stone (1m x 0.55m x 1.1m) on campus at the 1st anniversary memorial ceremony for deceased Lieutenant Seo, and every year Seo’s family members and university related members attend the annual memorial ceremony. Also, parents of the deceased have donated scholarships to Dankook University three times to help students in difficult situations.
