Based on the specialization policy, Dankook University is now focusing on increasing their competency in various fields.
As Dankook University already established their specialization plan and merged campuses by adjusting the subjects available at each campus, it is now focusing on improving the competency of each department. Its strategy is to improve competency by thoroughly preparing and reviewing each department’s specialization plans as it becomes the base for the university’s entire specialization plan.

The Adaption of bottom up decision making in specialized business
kills two birds with one stone, succeeding in specialization and improving education quality

After a careful review of the specialization plan centered around the planning division, on December 12, the university held a presentation on ‘Specializing University Education’ for the head officers of each college from both campuses’. The presentation’s main goal was to review the individual specialization plans of each college and to connect them to set the specialization direction for the university.

Instead of following a top down approach where each college was notified by the central head office, the university is trying a new direction; once each college establishes a plan suiting each department’s specialty and ability, the university will adapt and link each individual plan to the university’s overall specialization. By adapting a bottom up type of decision making, members of each college can actively participate in each department’s specialization.
Unlike the specialization plan that only involved certain colleges and departments, this type of specialization allows all colleges to specialize each department with their own plan, which naturally enforces each department’s competency and advances the university’s ability. This allows each college to gain competitive research skills, but also increases the university’s basic values in research and education as it puts extra effort in enforcing the university’s core competency of educating students.

Various policies implemented to specialize and improve education quality

As the university is planning to operate various policies to improve the quality of education for each department in connection to the specialization policy of the university, it held a seminar on the 12th to discuss various methods to improve the quality of education.
First to manage education quality, it newly defined the core ability that is desired by the university and developed a tool for evaluation. Through these efforts, each student’s ability is measured and evaluated at each level starting from their entrance date to their graduation. This allows for a portfolio, suitable for each individual to be built. The previous Major Education Certification Evaluation System will be used as the main tool for education quality management after the system and its efficiency is improved.

Anyone who passed the Major Education Certification Evaluation gets a token to apply for Dankook ACE Support Operation (provisional name), which is the university’s self specialized business support policy. Through Dankook ACE Support Operation, a model for an advanced creative department can be used by the colleges that have passed the Major Education Certification Evaluation and then each department is fully supported; this is operated under the Department of Education’s Financial Aid Evaluation Method. Colleges that have developed an education curriculum suitable for this era of convergence and have outstanding results will be provided with additional funds and incentives.
The Department Evaluation System and Lecture Evaluation System that are currently operated will be more strictly enforced. The Department Evaluation System will measure each department’s competency in exacting detail with 12 indicators which is more than the current 8 indicators that are used; furthermore, the results of these measurements will be reflected in adjustments made to each department’s maximum number of students, merging or abolishing majors, and faculty evaluations. Lecture Evaluations will be upgraded with related content so that it can be widely used by releasing evaluation scores to the public, re-educating faculty who received low scores, and using it as a faculty performance indicator.

The government initiates university education specialization program
to improve the efficiency and specialization of universities

This program will be promoted to improve the efficiency of university specialization by cooperating with the university education specialization program (Innovation Korea-33, hereafter IK-33) that is one of the university financial aid programs promoted by the government.
IK-33 is a government supported program for enhancing specialization of universities in Korea along with the renovation of university structures; under this operation, specialized departments with competency will be supported on 3 levels from 2014 to 2032. Dankook University is putting its best effort to be selected as an IK-33 operation channel and is planning to have all competitive colleges at the school apply for IK-33 after carefully reviewing each specialization plan submitted by each college.

A planning division personnel said “In order to improve, this is the most needed policy of our university’s as each department’s specialization is a cornerstone that will enhance the competitiveness of each applicable department, which is related to the university’s aim to be a specialized university.” Also, this person said “as relative evaluation is highly used in university level evaluations conducted by the government, every member’s attention and efforts are desperately needed today under the government’s powerful university renovation structure.
