Lee Dasom (Architecture, senior) won the grand prize from the ‘4th Korean Marine Design Competition’ held at the ‘Design Center Busan’ in Haeundae-gu on the 20th.
Minister of Trade, Industry & Energy prize (grand prize) winner, Lee Dasom’s art piece ‘Regeneration of Ship to Architecture’ is a restructuring of a 183M long abandoned ship into a ocean side structure; she also received 5 million won in prize money.

Ms. Lee positioned the art piece as a space where the land and ocean can organizationally interact with one another. The judges gave high points for Ms. Lee’s positioning.
Ms. Lee said “structures located near the ocean have characteristics that include environmental factors such as weather; since the ship already had all of those characteristics, I thought it can be a great ocean side structure.” Also, she said she made this piece because she thought, “this will provide a unique experience to the visitors because (she) re-organized the abandoned ship and re-formatted it as a structure rather than disassembling the ship and using metal pieces from it.”

Meanwhile, ‘The Ocean Design Competition’ which had celebrated its 4th anniversary this year, is an event started to focus people’s attention on the ocean and to have them understand the ocean more while supporting the maritime industry and its design competency. For the competition, there were a total of 4 sections including leisure equipment design, safety/industrial equipment design, space design, and communication design; a total of 300 ideas were submitted but only 26 pieces including 1 grand prize winner were selected and received prizes.
