Software Science major students won grand prize and third prize in the 3rd Smart TV App and Accessories Idea Competition hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The award ceremony was held at Yuksam-dong Renaissance Hotel on November 7, and the grand prize winner received an award plaque, 10 million Korean won in prize money, and a smart TV. The 3rd prize winner received an award plaque and 500,000 won.
Ms. Kim Hyo-jin (Software Science Major, senior) worked as a team leader of GUNIGUNI team which created the grand prize winning application ‘Mole Rush!’, while Mr. Cho Young-min (Software Science Major, senior) acted as a member of A.F.I. which created the 3rd prize winning application ‘Monster Olympics’.

Grand prize winning ‘Mole Rush!’ is an upgraded version of the famous landmine game adding a mole concept, and players compete against each other to expand their areas using smart phones and smart TVs. Compared to the original landmine game, which was a one-player game, ‘Mole Rush!’ is a game that can be enjoyed by 2~4 people. Also, the overall game process is viewed on TV while detailed parts of the game are controlled by each player via smart phone.

This game interested many people, as this is the first case where an amateur university student has won the grand prize in this competition’s history. Judges explained why they selected this game for the grand prize. They said this game is not only fun to play, but also a well made product that is compatible with various types of smart TVs including Samsung and LG, extending its usage areas.

“I want to thank the judges for this unexpected surprise grand prize,” said Ms. Kim. “My goal is to develop programs that can entertain people in the future.”

Third prize winner ‘Monster Olympics’ is a motion sensing application using TV and phone without a separate controller. Using the smart phone motion sensor function, each player can mimic the movement designated on each card. Being selected as one of the just two 3rd prize winners, ‘Monster Olympics’ received compliments for its high quality.
