Thirteen students from the department of Material Science and Engineering that Dankook University established at Yantai University finally matriculated at Dankook.
Dankook will play its role as an educational institute that fosters students’ abilities in their field of study and their understanding of Korean culture.

The dual degree program, a joint project promoted between Dankook of Korea and Yantai of China, is making progress toward its goal.

Last August, the first group of thirteen students from the department of Material Science and Engineering that Dankook opened at Yantai set foot on Korean soil to study at Dankook University. There are other Korean universities which have opened Korean language departments in China but this was the first time for a Korean university to admit students by establishing a non-language related program and it created a big sensation in the nation.

Starting with the orientation held on August 29, the exchange students took a step forward as Dankook family members. Li Jing Ying revealed her ambitions as a freshman and said “Everyone is so kind and the atmosphere around the university is very nice. We know that it is going to be tough to study our major in Korean but we encourage ourselves to overcome the difficulties.”

Apart from the regular major classes, the Yantai students will receive supplementary lessons from designated faculty members out of consideration for their need for linguistic support; this gives them the opportunity to review their regular lessons. The university is also planning to open an additional intensive Korean language course for these students.

Prof. Dong Hyun Lee, who teaches ‘An Introduction to High Polymer Engineering,’ commented, “The overall educational standard of the students is quite high. They might face some difficulties in taking the class conducted in Korean but I believe they will soon catch up with the class.”
