Garam Kim and Dongeun Kim (Department of Political Science and International Relations, Master’s Program) were chosen for the top award at the 10th KNDA Academic Thesis Competition in December 2021, held by the Korean National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) for graduate students in order to raise national awareness on foreign affairs and national security.

Their paper, titled ‘A study on the possibility of change in the North Korean Regime in line with the emerging security crisis: Focusing on the cases of the Arab Spring and the Arduous March’ looks into the anti-government protests in the Arab world that started in 2010 and the Arduous March in North Korea in the mid-1990s based on the premise that non-traditional factors such as food crises are newly entering the security realm and triggering a widespread global discourse.

The thesis sheds light on how the two events resulted in ‘two different political system fluctuations’ and recommends that Korea ‘should establish a global governance system preemptively in shaping its internal and external policies considering its ‘unique geopolitical position and possible emerging security crises.’ Garam Kim’s team won the first prize along with a KRW 3 million cash award after a close competition with teams from Seoul National University and the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
