Introduction

During my Ph.D. study at Philipps University in Germany I studied the regulation mechanisms of cytochrome c oxidase which is a rate limiting step of mitochondrial respiratory complexes in vivo. Mitochondria are the cellular organelles to produce cellular energy and reactive oxygen species. As a research scientist at Wayne State University School of Medicine, I researched on the correlation between mitochondrial dysfunctions and several human diseases including cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. The study of lung tissue specific isoform of cytochrome c oxidase was performed using knockout mice as well. The prevention mechanism from cellular damages caused by strokes and heart attacks was studied using infrared lights and this therapy was applied for US patent in 2010. My current research direction is studying the mitochondrial dysfunctions in human diseases and the cell signaling transduction targeting mitochondria.
