Kim Taeyeon | Department of Food Resource Economics

  • Grade:
    Professor

Introduction

I studied agricultural economics, agricultural policy, and the history of agriculture at the Department of Agricultural Economics and the Graduate School of Korea University. I majored in European Economic Integration at the Department of Economics, University of Sussex in the UK, and earned my Ph.D. from Newcastle University (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) for my research on the “Family Farming Model for Rural Development.”

Before studying in the UK, I worked at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) in the Distribution Management Division, conducting research on agricultural product distribution and wholesale markets. After returning to Korea, I joined the Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI), where I worked in the Rural Development Research Center on regional agricultural cluster policies and EU agricultural policies. In March 2005, I was appointed as a professor in the Department of Environmental and Resource Economics at Dankook University.

My research interests focus on theories and policies related to rural economy and social development. On the theoretical side, I am particularly interested in the new endogenous development theory, cluster theory, regional governance, farm household economics, rural territorial industry theory, and food systems theory. In terms of policy and field research, I study not only Korea’s agricultural and rural development policies, but also those of the EU and the UK, including agricultural policy, rural development policy, agri-environmental policy, regional policy, and food policy. I have published numerous papers on regional policies, rural development, agricultural policies, and the food industry in the EU and the UK, and have also authored research reports on Korea’s regional development and rural territorial industries. Recently, I published Reform of Direct Payment Schemes in the EU and Japan.

I served as President of the Korean Society of Organic Agriculture in 2022 and as President of the Korean Society of Agricultural and Food Policy in 2023. Currently, I am serving as a member of the Agriculture and Fisheries Subcommittee of the Presidential Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries, and Rural Policy. I also participate in various policy advisory committees of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, including those related to the public direct payment system, eco-friendly agriculture, and import safeguard measures.
