Introduction

Trombonist Gunyong Lee, approaching with a rich tone and fresh musical interpretation, graduated from Sunhwa Arts High School and Hanyang University, received a Master of Arts degree from Queens College at City University of New York, and a Doctoral Music of Arts degree in trombone from The University of Kansas, the first and youngest in Korea.

During his studies abroad, he grew through numerous performances at Carnegie Hall (New York), Lincoln Center (New York), Symphony Space Hall (New York), Kaufman Concert Hall (New York), and Kauffman Center (Kansas City), 1 and began to gain attention with the successful 10th anniversary memorial concert for 9/11 at The Riverside Church in 2011. He also recorded three wind ensemble performances with the world-renowned record label Naxos in 2013, 2014, and 2016 (OF SHADOW AND LIGHT, Concerto for Orchestra, In the shadow of No Towers), and in 2014, he held master classes and concerts with his trombone ensemble team, the Kansas Trombone Quartet, at Graceland University and Haskell Indian Nations University. In 2014, he was invited to the world-renowned Eutiner Festspiele festival in Eutin, Germany, where he learned European sentiments and musical elements while working with members of the Hamburg Orchestra. In June 2016, he successfully held his debut solo recital at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, receiving much acclaim and being featured in articles in the Korea Times and JoongAng Ilbo in the United States. He was also invited to perform two concerts at the Conservatorio di Milano that year. He served as a guest performer with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra (Kansas) and as principal performer with the Lawrence Community Orchestra (Kansas). After returning to Korea, he successfully held his homecoming solo recital in August 2016, and has contributed to the popularization of the trombone through continuous solo recitals at the Jeju AraMuse Hall in 2019, the Seoul Arts Center Recital Hall in the same year, the Dangjin Culture and Arts Center Small Theater in 2021, the TLI Art Center in 2023, and the Seongnam Ensemble Theater in 2024. He has also performed as a guest principal performer with the Dangjin Wind Orchestra, Seongnam Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean Chamber Orchestra (formerly Baroque Chamber Orchestra), Jeonju 2 Philharmonic Orchestra, Chuncheon Philharmonic Orchestra, and Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also interested in arranging, having signed a contract with Cherry Classic Music (an ITF-affiliated publisher) in 2014 for Mozart Requiem Selections for Trombone Quartet and in 2016 for A. Marcello Concert in C minor, and plans to continue publishing numerous pieces. He has studied various styles of trombone performance with world-renowned trombonists such as Nitzan Haroz (Principal trombone at Philadelphia), Shachar Israel (Assistant Principal trombone at Cleveland Orchestra), David Taylor (Bass trombone, New York City recording artist), and Steve Norrell (Bass trombone at Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), 3 and has participated in the ITF (International Trombone Festival) in 2013, 2016, and 2018 to continuously research and study trombone performance techniques.
He has taught at Sunhwa Arts High School, Chungnam Arts High School, Jeju National University, the Army Military Band, the Air Force Military Band, and the Marine Corps Military Band.
Currently, he is a Conn-Selmar Bach artist, leader of the Haneum Brass Quintet, and an assistant professor at Dankook University's College of Music and Arts. He continues to research and strive for both nurturing his students and his performance activities.
