He solved the durability issue of the structures which was a problematic subject in Nano-material Engineering, posting the results in the November issue of Scientific Reports Professor Song Young-seok’s research team (Department of Fiber System Engineering) has developed a technology that can revolutionarily improve the durability of nanostructures, which was a problematic subject in Nano-material Engineering Professor Song’s research team has developed a nanostructure that can retrieve its original shape through an electronic wave using carbon nano-material and a shape memory polymer. This result was posted in the internet version of the November issue of Scientific Reports, a sister scholarly paper of the national academic journal, Nature. Although nanotechnology has endless possibilities and it has been used in very limited areas in daily life such as semiconductors. Its use was very limited because its durability was not guaranteed since produced nano-patterns were easily damaged even by a small external shock. Therefore, the nanostructure’s durability was an unsolved problem in nanotechnology. Professor Song’s team solved the durability problem of nanostructures with smart materials such as shape memory material and self recovering material. Through this, nano-engineering is expected to be used more widely in various areas such as various types of displays including cell phones and TVs, smart systems including sensors and actuators, and surface engineering including coating. They produced a nano-lens that can be applied in optical science areas and analyzed various optical and surface characteristics. Also, existing smart materials were able to recover their shape by heating from the external source, but in this research, a new shape recovery mechanism was developed by charging electromagnetic waves absorbing carbon nanomaterial (fullerene) on nano-lenses. This allows the structure to be easily recovered by giving an external electromagnetic wave in case the nano-lens structure formed on the surface of a cell phone or LED is damaged. Furthermore, added fullerene was proven to absorb electronic waves and revolutionarily increase the mechanical strength of the nano-lens. Professor Song said “through this research, I am expecting to expedite the date that nano-engineering will be used in our daily lives as the team secured the long term durability of nanostructures in various areas.” Meanwhile, Song Young-Seok’s research team has found an essential phenomenon with micro-fluid that can be used to develop a portable blood analyzer or high tech cell analyzer that was developed from joint research with Seoul National University’s team (Professor Yoon Jae-Ryun). This research is expected to be applied in labs on chip technology that allows individuals to easily check their own health status by processing a simple blood assessment with their smart phone at home or work. Such results were posted in the same journal simultaneously.

Held at Oak Valley Ski Resort for two days, January 6~7 this lead to the construction of a strong national team for the Winter Olympics and to the expansion of the skiing fan base The National Elementary School Ski Competition was held to train upcoming athletes that could shine at the Pyeong Chang Winter Olympic Games in 2018. On January 6~7, Dankook University (President Chang Ho-sung) held the ‘7th Joong-Jae-Bae National Elementary School Ski Competition at Oak Valley Ski Resort located in Moon-mak, Gangwon-do. About 200 amateur skiers came from elementary schools around the nation and showed off their talents. In an effort to kill two birds with one stone, finding a rising star and to expanding the fan base of skiing, this year’s event had loosened the qualifications of the participants compared to previous competitions and the competition was conducted in two parts. In the 1st part of the competition, elementary school students who are registered with the Korean Ski Association were divided into groups by gender and competed in Alpine(Spin, Big Spin) and Cross-Country (Short track, Long track) and sectioned into three groups: 1st & 2nd graders, 3rd & 4th graders, 5th & 6th graders. 14.4 million won was given to the athletes from each group. The 2nd part of the competition which was just started this year, athletes who aren’t registered with the Korean Ski Association could also participate. The competition was held with 3 groups for each gender: 1st & 2nd graders, 3rd & 4th graders, 5 & 6 graders. Celebrating its 7th anniversary this year, the Joong-Jae-Bae National Elementary School Ski Competition was started by former students commemorating Dr. Joongjae Chang (Chairman of the Educational Foundation of Dankook University, Chairman of the Beom-eun Scholarship Foundation) who has been dedicating his life to developing Korea’s winter sports and other sporting competitions because of his passion for sports. In 2008, the university revived the national scale of ski competition for elementary school students which was in the downhill stage and caught the nation’s attention. Also, it is continuously focusing on finding up and coming skiers to prepare for the Pyeong Chang Winter Olympic Games in 2018. The event is held every year to build a base to make Korea a stronger competitor in the Winter Olympic Games by increasing the popularity of skiing. Since 1967, Dankook University has been searching for up and coming athletes by supporting equipment mainly to Doam elementary school and Doam middle school in Hyeong-gye, Gangwon-do in order to promote winter sports in Korea, which at the time had few Olympic class winter athletes. In 1968, it established a ski club, the first university in Korea to do so, and an ice skating club in 1976; the university has been a leader in developing winter sports in Korea.

The specialization policy has been activated, allowing specialization for each department (College)

Based on the specialization policy, Dankook University is now focusing on increasing their competency in various fields. As Dankook University already established their specialization plan and merged campuses by adjusting the subjects available at each campus, it is now focusing on improving the competency of each department. Its strategy is to improve competency by thoroughly preparing and reviewing each department’s specialization plans as it becomes the base for the university’s entire specialization plan. The Adaption of bottom up decision making in specialized business kills two birds with one stone, succeeding in specialization and improving education quality After a careful review of the specialization plan centered around the planning division, on December 12, the university held a presentation on ‘Specializing University Education’ for the head officers of each college from both campuses’. The presentation’s main goal was to review the individual specialization plans of each college and to connect them to set the specialization direction for the university. Instead of following a top down approach where each college was notified by the central head office, the university is trying a new direction; once each college establishes a plan suiting each department’s specialty and ability, the university will adapt and link each individual plan to the university’s overall specialization. By adapting a bottom up type of decision making, members of each college can actively participate in each department’s specialization. Unlike the specialization plan that only involved certain colleges and departments, this type of specialization allows all colleges to specialize each department with their own plan, which naturally enforces each department’s competency and advances the university’s ability. This allows each college to gain competitive research skills, but also increases the university’s basic values in research and education as it puts extra effort in enforcing the university’s core competency of educating students. Various policies implemented to specialize and improve education quality As the university is planning to operate various policies to improve the quality of education for each department in connection to the specialization policy of the university, it held a seminar on the 12th to discuss various methods to improve the quality of education. First to manage education quality, it newly defined the core ability that is desired by the university and developed a tool for evaluation. Through these efforts, each student’s ability is measured and evaluated at each level starting from their entrance date to their graduation. This allows for a portfolio, suitable for each individual to be built. The previous Major Education Certification Evaluation System will be used as the main tool for education quality management after the system and its efficiency is improved. Anyone who passed the Major Education Certification Evaluation gets a token to apply for Dankook ACE Support Operation (provisional name), which is the university’s self specialized business support policy. Through Dankook ACE Support Operation, a model for an advanced creative department can be used by the colleges that have passed the Major Education Certification Evaluation and then each department is fully supported; this is operated under the Department of Education’s Financial Aid Evaluation Method. Colleges that have developed an education curriculum suitable for this era of convergence and have outstanding results will be provided with additional funds and incentives. The Department Evaluation System and Lecture Evaluation System that are currently operated will be more strictly enforced. The Department Evaluation System will measure each department’s competency in exacting detail with 12 indicators which is more than the current 8 indicators that are used; furthermore, the results of these measurements will be reflected in adjustments made to each department’s maximum number of students, merging or abolishing majors, and faculty evaluations. Lecture Evaluations will be upgraded with related content so that it can be widely used by releasing evaluation scores to the public, re-educating faculty who received low scores, and using it as a faculty performance indicator. The government initiates university education specialization program to improve the efficiency and specialization of universities This program will be promoted to improve the efficiency of university specialization by cooperating with the university education specialization program (Innovation Korea-33, hereafter IK-33) that is one of the university financial aid programs promoted by the government. IK-33 is a government supported program for enhancing specialization of universities in Korea along with the renovation of university structures; under this operation, specialized departments with competency will be supported on 3 levels from 2014 to 2032. Dankook University is putting its best effort to be selected as an IK-33 operation channel and is planning to have all competitive colleges at the school apply for IK-33 after carefully reviewing each specialization plan submitted by each college. A planning division personnel said “In order to improve, this is the most needed policy of our university’s as each department’s specialization is a cornerstone that will enhance the competitiveness of each applicable department, which is related to the university’s aim to be a specialized university.” Also, this person said “as relative evaluation is highly used in university level evaluations conducted by the government, every member’s attention and efforts are desperately needed today under the government’s powerful university renovation structure.

‘Reading Campus Campaign’ to Promote Reading Education Dankook Culture Festival Held November 29 A reading trend has hit the DKU Campus with the start of the ‘Reading Campus Campaign’ These days, as technology develops, the importance of humanities and liberal arts has become more apparent. Dankook University is promoting its new ‘Reading Campus Campaign’ to help students encounter books more naturally. Reading related events and campaigns are being held in various areas of the campus, and with such events, Dankookians’ passion for book reading is firing up regardless of the ice cold Korean winter. The Center of General Education (Dean Yoon Seung-Joon) held the ‘2013 Dankook Literacy Festival’ in both campuses on November 29 and opened various events for fostering reading culture. This is the first event opened by Dankook University in order to create a reading campus environment under the ‘Reading Campus Campaign’. Under the subject of ‘Growing Youth’, this event featured a book report competition and book quiz competition based on 5 selected books (Isolated Room, Portrait of the Days of Youth, Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, Damian, and The Alchemist). Also, at the literature concert hosted by chair professor Kwon Young-min, author Cho Jung-rae who wrote Taebaek Sanmaek (Taebaek Mountain Range), and Jungle Man-li (Jungle Thousand Miles Away) was invited to share her thoughts on literature. Finalists of Book Report Competition Give Top Notch Presentations 16 students who passed the paper evaluation among 62 participants attended the final round of the Book Report Competition held at the 3rd Science Center of Cheonan Campus at 10am. These students who passed the first round selected 3 books out of 5 selections on which to write their book reports. They all gave powerful presentations in front of the audience in the final stage. After each finalist’s 5 minute presentation, evaluations were made by 4 judges representing Dankook University professors who asked questions to the presenter in turn. “I don’t have chances to read a lot of books, but I have interest in reading, so I made a reading club with my friends to discuss and share opinions with them,” said Mr. Lee Hee-Jae who won the grand prize with The Alchemist, Damian, and Portrait of the Days of Youth. “I tried to understand what that selected book wanted to deliver, and I tried to explain my feelings on it in detail.” He also strongly recommended reading by saying that for university students it is important to find a way to achieve their goals and that reading a number of good books will help them find that path and choose the right way. Lee received a scholarship equal to full tuition for one semester, and the second prize winner received 2 million Korean won, while third and fourth place took 1 million won and 300,000 won, respectively. Author Cho Jung-rae: “Please don’t neglect your duties as students – stuyding and reading books…”, Kwon Young-min’s Literature Concert At 1pm at Jukjeon Campus, West Wing B104, ‘Kwon Young-min’s Literature Concert’ was held. Cho Jung-rae, a million-seller author who wrote Taebaek Sanmaek (Taebaek Mountain Range), Jungle Man-li (Jungle Thousand Miles Away) and other works, was invited to the literature concert hosted by chair professor Kwon Young-min. At the event hall, many people came to see the famous author, and the lecture room was very crowded. Cho caught the audience’s eyes and ears with his honest and straight answers, showing his research notes in response to students’ questions. Also, although his age is over 70, he lectured in a relaxed and joyful style reflecting his background as a great author. In response to a student’s question on where he gets his ideas, Cho responded, “In the dictionary, an idea is defined as a thought that suddenly comes to your mind; however, an author’s idea is quite different from that. As a miner digs out the minerals through continuous efforts, I also get ideas from continuous study and thinking.” In addition, he pointed out that he is continuously putting effort into his work to create a good piece saying that he trusts his efforts will pay him back. At the end of the lecture, he emphasized that studying and working hard are the duties of a student saying that, “Life is a track where you put yourself as a horse and run by endlessly whipping yourself; and it is a stepping stone only where two stones are laid in line one by one.” Book Quiz Competition, No grand prize winner chosen At 3pm in Jukjeon Campus, West Hall, room B104, a book quiz competition was held. Unfortunately, no one took the grand prize at the book quiz competition composed of an OX (Y/N) quiz and short answer questions, but Ms. Park So-hyun (Department of Korean Language and Literature, sophomore), Ms. Kang Eun-young (School of Business Administration, sophomore), and Mr. Park Su-yeon (School of Urban Planning and Real Estate, freshman) won the 2nd prize, while Ms. Park So-yoon (Department of Software Science, sophomore) won the 3rd prize. All prize winners will receive scholarships along with the Beom-eun Scholarship Foundation Chairman’s Award. “I am happy with the results which exceed my efforts, and I am more grateful for my inner growth from reading,” said 2nd prize winner Park So-hyun (Department of Korean Language and Literature, sophomore). “I will let my friends know of this quiz competition so that more people can participate and enjoy the festival next time.” Although ‘2013 Dankook Literacy Festival’ was held for only one day, it showed possibilities for the renaissance of humanities and literature in Dankook University from students’ passion and attention on the competition and its various programs. The university hopes to see many Dankook literature artists with true heart and knowledge awakening as alumnus poet Shin Dong-yeop (1903~1969, graduate of Dankook University History Department) shouted ‘Kernel of April (democracy)’ and ‘Shouting (awareness) of my fellow students in Gomnaru shall live but the shells (anti-mass awareness) must be dismissed (Donghak farmer’s movement)’ in the chaotic historical change movement.

Professor Lee Seong-Wook, selected to the natural science basic research section with his research on suppressing colorectal cancer metastasis in the liver Professor Min Dong-Won, selected to the social science section with his research on the effect of psychological power on brand new products In the ‘2013 Outstanding 50 Pieces of Basic Research Results’, Professor Lee Sung-wook (Natural Science Basic Research section) of the Molecular Biology department and Professor Min Dong-won of the Business administration department (Humanities and Social Science section) were selected separately. The ‘Outstanding 50 Researches of Basic Research Results’ is carried out by the Ministry of Education to find and reward outstanding examples in the Natural Sciences, National Responsibility, as well as basic Humanities and Social Science among researchers that execute research development every year. A total of 30 from Natural Science, 11 cases from National Responsibility and 9 from Humanities and Social Science were chosen this year. Professor Lee Seog-wook, selected to the natural science basic research section with his research on suppressing colorectal cancer metastasis in the liver Professor Lee Seog-wook received recognition on developing ‘Nucleic Acid Aptamer’ which suppresses ‘Carcinoembryonal Antigen (CEA),’ a cancer marker found in many colorectal cancer patients dying from metastasis in the liver. As a result of an experiment with Nucleic Acid Aptamer, developed by Professor Lee’s team, on mouse test subjects who had colorectal cancer, 9 mice out of 10 showed the suppressing effect on metastasis. It is specifically being evaluated as a new next generation medicine that can easily infiltrate cancer tissue and overcome existing medicine’s limitations. Also, since Nucleic Acid Aptamers specifically merge with over-expressive Carcinoembryonal Antigen (CEA) that can cause liver metastasis, it provided a possibility to diagnose and cure metastasis between colorectal cancer cells at the same time. Professor Lee Seog-wook said “this will be the initial point that will close the source of colorectal cancer metastasis to the liver and lower the mortality rate” Professor Min Dong-won, selected to the social science section with his research on the effect of psychological power on brands and new products Professor Min Dong-won was selected as an outstanding result example as he presented a research paper on ‘Effects of psychological Power on the Stereotyping of Branch Extension Product’ under the subject of “Center of psychological power should be moved from the customer to the company” through experimenting on how much one’s mental power affects one’s perception of new brand products.” In the paper, he said brands are doing their best to attract the customers by performing various marketing strategies yet it also explained that general strategies that explain the relationship between the customer and the company by saying such words like ‘The customer is king’, ‘Customers are always right’ could have negative effects on customers, and suggested a new direction in marketing strategy. Professor Min Dong-won’s research was the only one selected in the field of Business among 3 thesis papers for outstanding results in the social science department, and he also received an award in 2013 from the Korean Advertisement Association’s New Scholar Outstanding Thesis Paper. Also, another one of Professor Min Dong-won’s research papers with the title of ‘Psychological Power’s effect’, ‘Is Power Powerful? Power, Confidence, and Goal Pursuit” was posted in the September issue of an A level international scholar journal, ‘International Journal of Research in Marketing (SSCI level) in the marketing field.

Students make video celebrating university’s new start with unified campus In remembrance of university merger, video footage of two campuses cross edited. Students made a video celebrating the merger of the two DKU campuses of Jukjeon and Cheonan. The title is ‘To Another [Dankook],’ and it was produced to celebrate the new start of Dankook University as it converts to the One University, Two Campuses system. The video is composed of students of each campus enjoying school life, and the footage was edited in split screen. This video is especially worth notice because its story and video editing direction came directly from the students. Moreover, it is notable that the video illustrates the two campuses as one university. Filming one student waking up another dozing student at the other campus but showing it all in one screen with a split image or showing people playing soccer in different spaces yet editing the footage as if they are playing soccer in same place sends a message of Dankook University’s unification. Director Park Hee-Yeon (junior, Department of Visual Communication Design) said, “it was difficult to move between Jukjeon and Cheonan every time to shoot footage, but I feel that each campus has become closer like brothers watching this completed film.” Last June 27, Dankook University received approval from the Ministry of Education for a Main-Satellite campus merge, and each campus is now enhancing its specific competency; Jukjeon Campus for specialization in IT and CT, Cheonan Campus for specialization in BT and foreign languages.
