Dankook University undergraduate students’ education contribution is making the world a better place with delightful spring weather. Club Sweet Apple team composed of undergraduate students of Science Education Department of the College of Education has received an excellence award at the education contribution competition executed by Ministry of Education. ‘Alak-Dalak (Colorful) Happy Classroom’, an afterschool education contribution program for elementary school students, is a voluntary operating university student’s education contribution activities of various creative experience programs developed by university students themselves. As a talent contribution act, they visited 3rd and 4th grades of elementary students under the title of ‘Visiting Lab’ and did fun lab tests for them to develop interest in Science. Currently this club is composed of 4 talented students in sophomore and junior levels of Science Education Department who are dreaming of becoming science teachers in the future. As a member of Sweet Apple club, they were developing various science test and education program and came to a mutual understanding of doing something more valuable to share what they have learned and practiced with others. As a result of numerous thoughts and discussions was to do education contribution activity for elementary students. They started what they are most confident in and what they are best at. Also, as they are want to-be-teachers for futures, this act made all club members to think about what kind of teachers they will become in the future. Club leader, Jae-Wang Lee said, “Although there were some difficulties in teaching since elementary students are very active, we were able to lead the program with appropriate handling, and it was worthwhile. Especially, we had a great time because we learned about each other as well. As a student of College of Education who have to prepare for Teacher Certification Examination and has overwhelming department activities etc, spending time in talent contribution activities might be difficult for them. However, they are saying this talent contribution activity has been a ‘Win-Win’ opportunity for themselves and the elementary school students. According to them, it is good for both because elementary students will learn scientific knowledge and gain interest in science through lab experiences; and themselves are learning another during their preparation for the contribution program. Jae-Wang Lee revealed his dream as saying, “Alfred North Whitehead, an English philosopher said ‘A good teacher teaches well. An excellent teacher shows it themselves. A Great teacher puts a fire on the heart.’ As we are aiming to become teachers, I want to become a teacher who puts a fire on the heart.” Teacher isn’t a career that can just be obtained by merely passing a teacher certification examination. A true teacher might be the one who has passion to share all of what they have to the students as Sweet Apple team. Their act of following their dream to become a true teacher makes us think about ‘teaching’ once again. I am proud of these members who will become great teachers someday who put a fire on the heart of the students.

Dankook University has been serving areas under blind spots of medical welfare benefits with healing acts for 3 years. Dankook University medical team visits Cheongyang-gun located near Cheonan Campus. There isn’t any general hospital in district although many are suffering with elderly illnesses since most of the residents are elders as most of farming neighbors. In 2010, Dankook University signed an cooperative exchange agreement with Cheongyang-gun where Chunngyang Farm, a practice farm of fruit planting, is located. This was a promise to pump up more active exchanges in between based on the relations they had since 1970s. According to this agreement, Cheongyang-gun requested to send medical team in consideration of Cheongyang-gun which is lacking medical supports. As requested, Dankook University has been sending continuously voluntary medical team since 2011. This year’s medical volunteering activity was opened in Cheongyang Cultural Center located in Cheongyang-eup of Cheongyang-gun on last April 12th. When you look inside lecture rooms of Dankook University, you’ll notice something different. Entrance doors of lecture rooms have a small window on each of them so that people can see through. Sometimes, we will see people peep inside the classroom through the window and carefully enters the room. A window appeared on a door because of one student. A window was added on the door to answer the request of a student who asked the university to help them check inside the room because they often have trouble going inside classroom when they are late or when they are looking for an empty classroom to discuss team project. Surely this is a small change, but it shows a difference from the past. This is a change made by Dankook CS Management Center which started this year. Small but necessary request is actually being accepted to the university operation and management by CS Management Center. It has only been about 3 months since CS Management Center started. It has been a short time, but many changes have occurred in Dankook University. Various policies are being executed to provide best satisfaction to the students in every part of the school life from the least to the largest under the goal of providing best educational administration service. One of the outstanding examples is establishing an integral call center and Dansori CS Center. Integral Call Center [1899-3700], Feel Free to Ask Anything. On March 4, we opened up an integral call center for the first time in domestic university. Total 3 residential customer representatives are handling various inquiries through call. They aren’t just merely transferring calls to the applicable department, but they are managing various tasks such as undergraduate administration, various events in school, various inquiries and counseling, and complaint handling etc. They have increased task handling efficiency by prompt handling of inquiries and decreasing workload of administration officers who have been on heavy call duties. During past 2 months, average about 230 calls per day have been received in integral call center. As it was the beginning of the semester, the calls were mainly about students’ inquiries related to university life such as classroom location, how to apply for a class, how to enter dormitory, and how to request for a scholarship. Other than this, various inquires had been received from parents, outside organizations and enterprises. “Before, I had to visit relevant department or department office to ask questions, but most of the students don’t know which department handles which problem. Even when I called, in order to speak to the manager, I had to be transferred by several people. But now, I can simply make a one call, and most of the problems are solved. It’s very convenient. (Da-Kyung Ryu, Accounting Sophomore) Some calls entered in call center have made a huge change in the school. One of the student’s parents have called in and complained that her child is suffering because there isn’t a refrigerator in the dormitory room and requested for an installation. And eventually, a refrigerator was installed in every room of the dormitory. ‘Dansori CS Center’, Taking responsibility for Convenient Service in University ‘Dansori CS Center’ which provides various service necessary for university undergraduate life is welcoming people in both campuses. ‘Dansori CS Center’ is a name selected by the member’s vote; it means they listen to the ‘sori (Korean word that refers to sound, words)’ Dankook people and providing the best service. ‘Dansori CS Center’ is located at suite 118 of Beomjung Hall in Jukjeon Campus, and suite 104-2 of Yulgok Memorial Library of Cheonan Campus. They are not only handling basic tasks such as issuing certificate and student ID for undergraduates and graduates but also provide university life problems, sending and receiving documents via Fax, and even provides convenient services like cell phone charge service and umbrella rental service. Putting Efforts to Provide High-Quality Customer Satisfactory Service In addition, CS Management Center is analyzing satisfaction rate of the students and general educational service consumer feels in details, and putting an effort to improve ‘education quality’ of the university. Its goal is to enforce faculty education to provide maximized customer satisfactory service in all departments and to develop perfect customer service program to establish differential service competence for Dankook University. To accomplish this, they are currently executing various management tasks such as operating student monitoring team, satisfaction rate investigation for department administration department, and CS education on faculties etc.

Development of English learning app for children using smart robot and smart phone Enhancement of learning effectiveness through environments suitable for users by adjusting to children’s eye-level A student has developed an application using a smart phone and a robot which young children can more easily learn English. Kinteractive Team, which is composed of computer application engineering students, won the grand prize (Korean Robot Industry Promotion Principle’s Award) at the Smart Robot App Contest supervised by the Korean Robot Industry Promotion members which ended on February 26th. The winners are Jong Kuk Lim, Dong Seok Yang (3rd Semester of the Computer Application Engineering Master’s course), and Eun Bi Lee (Computer Undergraduate 4th year). The competition was held in such a way so that they had to produce an app for smart phones using robot Albert, an early childhood education robot made by SK Telecom, which children could learn useful contents. The competition was held since last August, for a total of 7 months, which a total of 125 teams participated, and not only did teams from KAIST, Kwangwoon University etc, and famous national universities related to IT and robots participate, but teams from overseas universities, professional children contents producing companies, IT companies etc also participated and a heated competition was held. Through the 1st and 2nd strict rounds of deliberation, 18 teams were selected, and the ‘Fun kids world’ app created by Kinteractive out of these teams took possession of the first prize and received 20million won. Above this, Sung Hung Jung (Computer Undergraduate 4th year) won silver in the Children’s Safety Education App with his ‘Save the Children’ and received 5 million won as well. “The team name Kinteractive is a compound word of kids and interactive, and was decided upon from the intention of approaching children with more familiarity through interaction between robot and human instead of making it a unilateral cramming method of education. We endeavored to include these thoughts into the app which we made, (Jong Kuk Lim).” The app ‘Fun kids world’ which they made uses a smart robot to which children can approach more easily in learning English. There are a range of sites drawn on the map board and when the children select a particular site, the smart robot automatically moves and studies English according to the various situations set in the different sites. Especially because it is not just a simple memorizing and mainly revising method of English education but rather conversations according to different situations, various games, numerical studies etc, it is an advantage that it enables mixed and integrated studies. As it is made so that one can use numerical cards, country name cards etc, various cards and books, and not use the app, one is enabled to have various fused online and offline experiences. For the English conversations or pronunciations etc, they asked foreign students from Dankook University to make recordings etc and put in their efforts to heighten the completeness of the program. The interesting part is the fact that it differs to other English learning programs and has applied the concept of keeping a robot. Thus, by using the idea of the avatar fostering game ‘Tamagotchi’ which gained sensational popularity in the old days, it is made so that the children must foster the smart robot by them in order to proceed to the next level. Through this, they were able to make a leading education with the use of interaction with the robot instead of mainly using a one-way cramming method of learning. “From the developing stages, we had a lot of thoughts as to ‘how we could make a program set according to children’s eye-level’. Fortunately there was a person from one of the team members who taught English to children, and we were able to gain a lot of help from children and parents. We also had to develop books, maps cards etc, and it wasn’t easy getting a designer, and especially for the robot to automatically move on top of the map, we had to insert a special code, but I remember for the printing we had to re-print over 8 times because it needed special printing. The expenses were also high, of course (Dong Seok Yang).” Through many trial and errors, the developed app received a lot of good responses from parents and children. A bond of sympathy was received for the fact that the various contents and studying methods were at children’s eye-levels. In actual fact, the app which they developed also received appraisal from the judges that it could be commercialized straight away because the completion was so high. Currently the app which they have developed is being planned to enter into the commercializing stage with the support from SK Telecom. Out of the prize money which they received, they are planning to donate some (1million won) of it to their juniors for development funds. “Through developing the app, I have realized the fact that it is not just simple technology, but areas such as engineering, humanity and sociology must be fused together in order to produce good results. We received a lot of help from the guidance professor, Professor Yong Keun Choi since the planning stages, and as much as there were good results from using the knowledge we learned all this time from school, we would like to donate some of the prize money as development funds in hoping that juniors will also study with diligence (Eun Bi Lee).”
