DKU now 11 ranks higher compared to the last year’s Joongang Ilbo University Evaluation DKU scores high in Education and History in Dong-A Ilbo Major Evaluation Lately, Dankook University has been recording a continuous rise in its ranking in evaluations conducted by the press and other outside sources. This means that the university’s competitiveness has been strengthened driven by the focus on promoting the university’s specialization after it moved its location to Jukjeon from Seoul. 11 Ranks Up from Last Year’s Results in Joongang Ilbo’s University Evaluation According to the University Rankings of 2013, announced by Joongang Ilbo on October 7, our university has risen 11 ranks. This achievement is mainly due to DKU’s rise in the Globalization Index of the evaluations. According to Joongang Ilbo, the percentage of foreign professors of Dankook University has increased to 10 times greater than in 2008, and the Globalization Index rose intensely as the number of overseas exchange students has continued to increase by expanding relevant infrastructure including dormitories. Also, in the Faculty Research Index, the number of academic publications per professor in Humanities and Society and Physical Science recorded 7th place among universities around the nation. Moreover, the university was selected as the 16th university that corporate employers want to hire new employees from in the Reputation and Society Index. Education, History Departments Selected in Top List of Dong-a Ilbo Department Evaluation The Education Department took 4th place and the History Department took 7th place in the competitiveness rank for each department based on the results of the impact of academic paper publications on 7 different areas of Humanities and Society as announced on September 23 by Dong-a Ilbo. These achievements are the result of joint projects executed by Dong-a Ilbo, Korea Research Foundation, and Trium― a social media analysis corporation― on analyzing the registered academic journal article database in the Humanities and Society area within the Korean Citation Index (KCI). Specifically, in the top 20 list of most effective scholars in each field, the following professors from Dankook University were chosen: Professor Ga Sang-Jun in 9th place (Politics and Diplomacy), Professor Kim Eun-Kyung in 10th place and Professor Kim Ae-Hwa in 14th place (Education), Professor Kim Mun-Sik in 6th place with Professor Jeon Duk-Jae in 11th place and Professor Lee Jong-Su in 18th place (History), and Professor Huh Jae-Young in 7th place (Korean Language and Culture). This is a direct result of the university’s support for each department’s competitiveness through our university’s continuous investment in Humanities and Social Sciences. Recently, regarding the university’s continuous upward movement in evaluations, the Planning and Evaluation Team Manager said, “Finally, the fruits of our long-term investments of promoting the university’s specialization and moving the campus to a different location have been revealed in the effect on evaluation ranking”. Also, he said the university will do its best to push up the rank even further by preparing concentrated support for the areas that need more attention.

‘Bow Tie Project’ Sends Kimchi Refrigerator to Local Children’s Center JTBC On-Air Heroes Win Grand Prize How many stages should we pass to buy a kimchi refrigerator with a bow tie? This may sound ridiculous, but there is an answer to this question. Naturally, it is under the premise of sharing. There is a group of heroes who made this ridiculous project possible. The heroes are the members of Fortune Team: Kim Hae-Ni (senior, Sino-Korean Education), Kim Do-Won (senior, International Trade), Ham Cho-Rong (senior, Visual Design), and Lee Jee-Yea (senior, Business Administration at Dongduk Women’s University). They won the grand prize from ‘On-Air Heroes’, a JTBC University Student Supporters Program held between July 4 to August 22 with their ‘Bow Tie Project’. According to Fortune Team, the answer to the above question is 8 stages. The ‘Bow Tie Project,’ started to provide a kimchi refrigerator to a local children’s center, was completed through 8 stages of product exchange. A bow tie provided by Kim Do-Won of Fortune Team was exchanged for a stand-light and book stand (Shin Kyung-Sik, a student preparing for exams), then perfume (Lee Jee-Hyun, a university student), then a TV (Kwon Hyuk-Jun, a professional soldier), then a food drier (Kim Hyun-Wook, a junk store owner), a fan (Cho Seung-Wook, the JTBC hidden singer PD), some clothes (Chun Hyun-Moo, TV entertainer) and finally a kimchi refrigerator (Ko Young-Kil). “While I was thinking of what meaningful task I could do through the On-Air Heroes Program, I thought of this project because I wanted to give a kimchi refrigerator to the children of an Incheon city children’s center,” said participant Kim Hae-Ni. “When I was volunteering there, I saw them eating over-fermented kimchi in the summer because they did not have a kimchi refrigerator. I am happy and grateful for the project’s successful results.” Fortune Team, working together to build a more meaningful donation culture, operates a facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/bowtieproject) to notify interested people of their goals and to share the donation culture. They also posted their goal statement on a famous website and uploaded a video of their product exchange process on Youtube. Their video was very popular and has thus far recorded about 13,000 hits on Youtube. Their outstanding idea and their efforts to spread sharing culture yielded the grand prize and 3 million won of prize money. However, these heroes gained much greater insight beyond the joy of winning this prize. They learned the fact that there are still many people sharing and helping others in our society. They said they felt proud because of peoples’ cheering and attention given to them during the ‘Bow Tie Project’. “I was able to try something that I used to think was impossible through this project,” said Kim Do-Won (senior, International Trade). He also said that he expects the 8 weeks of activities in the program will be imprinted in his memory because of the pleasant outcome.

Students Participating in DKU’s International Summer School Produce Line-Up Video Live Emotion of Youths Spanning East and West Stands Out In succession of “Lip Dub,” a Dankook University introductory and promotional video which gained attention among universities 3 years ago, another interesting video has been shot. More surprisingly, it was made by foreign students who came to Dankook University from abroad to study during summer vacation. It was a blazing hot afternoon in August. A small number of foreigners oblivious to differences in skin color started to gather in Jukjeon Campus. They were smiling all the time. They had blue and red wigs in their hands and were busy memorizing something. They were students participating in DKU’s 2013 International Summer School (ISS). It was shooting day for ‘Lined Up’ (a video of lined up students singing but pretending to lip sync a song – the original audio soundtrack will be added later to the video). They set up the location at Deulsaem Street between Beomjeong Hall and Toegye Memorial Central Library. They prepared to shoot the video by setting up a fixed camera and helping each other practice their parts. About 40 foreign students were repetitively mumbling the lyrics and poses next to the camera to perform their parts perfectly. This UCC video was planned and produced by foreign students who were participating in DKU’s ISS to record their memories in Dankook University while getting to know each other a little better. Starting from the music and poses to the prop selection, all of the elements were planned out and prepared by these students. Swedish female duet singer Icona Pop’s “I Love It” was selected. This is a well known song to the public since it has been used in a popular cell phone advertisement and other media. 2 hours after starting the video shoot, foreign student participants monitored their performance, encouraging each other for their efforts. With satisfaction, each of them carried a joyful memory from Dankook University in their head and heart. John Legaspi (Electric Computer Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, USA, age 24) who planned the video sent thanks to the participants saying he “planned the video shoot to keep the short yet joyful time and memories in Dankook University forever.”

Dankook University Establishes Material Science and Processing Department in Yantai University Dankook Establishes Its Name Globally with Opening of Relevant Majors and Korean Classes “Although Korea has a higher cost of living than China, I will definitely come back to study in Korea because of its advanced studies, good learning environment, and, most of all, because of it offers a promising future for employment after returning to China.” “I will come to study at Dankook University,’ answered Mr. Wang-Chun-Ja (王天佐, freshman, Yantai University Material Science Processing Major) even before we had finished asking his impression of Korea and the Korean cultural experience program. Mr. Wang is a freshman in Yantai University of China majoring in Material Science and Processing who recently participated in the DKU IKLCP (Intensive Korean Language Culture Program) conducted by Dankook University from last August 1st to 23rd. A total of 9 students of Yantai University’s Material Science and Processing Department, including Mr. Wang, participated in IKLCP. They visited Dankook University not only to participate in the training program for Korean language and culture, but also to check out the school before deciding whether to study abroad here. Ms. Wang-Suh-Heum (freshman, Yantai University Material Science and Processing Major) said, “I will definitely share stories of what I’ve learned and felt at Dankook University to help my friends’ preparation for overseas study once I return to my school.” She also said many students of Yantai University are hoping to study abroad in Dankook University. To be Employed by Korean Companies in China, Students Study in Both Universities At Yantai University, located in Shandong Province, the Korean wave extends to education. About 3,000 Korean companies, including large corporations such as LG, as well as medium size corporations, have branches in regions in Shandong Province surrounding Yantai. For this reason, the number of Chinese university students seeking employment in Korean companies that have entered China increases every year. This means that they will enforce their competitiveness for employment to be hired in Korean corporations by not only becoming proficient in the Korean language proficiency speaking skills but also by obtaining advanced knowledge in major subjects. Korean companies located in major eastern Chinese cities of Shandong Province like Qingdao, Weihai, Yantai, etc., are very popular among local residents. Because of the high quality working conditions and high wages, many Chinese residents are hoping to enter these companies. There is a growing population of Chinese university students hoping to be hired by these firms as technicians, researchers or office workers rather than as laborers. In such an environment, the collaborative education program between Yantai University and Dankook University is gaining in popularity among Chinese students. There are two types of Material Science and Processing programs at Yantai University. The first one is a 4-year education program in Yantai University, and the second one is a 2+2 Program which allows students to spend their first 2 years in Yantai University and the second 2 years in Dankook University. In the traditional program, students can take Korean language classes, and over 1/3 of their major classes are taught by exchange professors. In the 2+2 Program, students take classes at both Yantai University and Dankook University, respectively, for 2 years each. Dankook University is planning to teach Polymer Engineering, Fiber System Engineering, and Chemical Engineering to Material Science and Processing Department students of Yantai University. These courses represent promising majors in Dankook University because of their high competitiveness factor in employment and high future industrial quality. In addition, industries related to such majors are continuously growing in China. Especially, since many companies of related industry fields are located in the Yantai area, these majors are popular in Yantai University. Moreover, when the program was established, majors in these fields received support from the Chinese government and Shandong Province.

Do you know Dankook University’s ‘Nick Vujicic’, Ms. Shin Ho-Bin?

On July 19 (Fri), 2pm, A woman entered the Law Scholarship Center of the Jukjeon Campus in a wheelchair with her father. She burst into tears as two professors warmly welcomed her when she got out of the elevator on the 5th floor. She was there to meet her mentors, professors Cho Sung-Yong and Kim Suk-Hyun (From the Law Department at the College of Law). “I wanted to come here so much. For the past several years, I have been struggling with the illness so I couldn’t visit school. But now I am here. Since the school moved over here and I live in a nearby town, Suji, I could come. It’s been 10 years already.” Ms. Shin Ho-Bin. On 2002, she entered the Seoul campus as a law student with a full 4-year scholarship. However, it was the next year, her sophomore year, that this passionate scholar with so much potential as an attorney, who even started to take law tests from her freshmen year, had to stop her studies. In her freshmen year, she felt tired and powerless and eventually she had to leave the school after her sophomore year because her illness became so severe that she could not bear even simple daily activities. This was the start of her long fight against the illness. At that time, she did not know what her illness was, so she had to go around to many hospitals, and she was finally diagnosed with the illness named ‘Scleroma.’ Among all Scleroma disease, her illness was called ‘Systemic Sclerosis’ which was known to have the most severe symptoms. (*Systemic Sclerosis’ is an illness that accompanies the thickening or hardening of skin, blood vessel, and internal organs.) The life of this passionate 20 year old, who dreamt and invested in her future as a successful lawyer slowly started to change from that day. With the hope to be cured soon, she started to fight against her illness but her symptoms progressively worsened. At that time, she was a healthy 175 cm tall woman, but she became more and more weak every day and her health and even her youth quickly worsened with her symptoms. Her parents sacrificed their lives to cure their first born child; her father quit his job to support her daughter and her mother kept on working to support the family. However, as her symptoms did not show much improvement, Ms. Shin got tired of dealing with the illness and slowly insulated her mind from the world. Regardless of the family’s effort and various treatments, her illness got worse. In 2009, she even had to cut off one of her toes because her nerve system started to die in her hands and feet. Finally, she was given a death sentence by a doctor on November 2011. She barely survived each day counting the days until her death, being dependent on an oxygen mask, but miraculously she recovered from the illness. After that she started to communicate with the world to live a meaningful life with her remaining years. “When I was given a death sentence, but recovered slowly after that, a thought came to me. I decided to spend my newly given lifetime to do something meaningful. That’s why I started to write.” To leave a small mark on the world against the destined short life that might be left to her, she started to write and upload her stories on an internet community site which she often visited. She also wrote letters to the people she respected. The people from her online community sent her a book made of the short replies readers left under her postings, and many people from various levels of life including nun Lee Hae-In, poet Koeun, Seoul mayor Park Won-Sun, celebrity Cha In-Pyo, baseball player Park Chan-Ho, and Dankook University Chancellor Chang Ho-Sung sent replies with sincere encouragement and sympathy to her plight. Chancellor Chang Ho-Sung introduced her to a well known Oriental medical doctor in China and helped her to get treatment. She was encouraged by the replies and the world as she started to communicate. However, her pain did not end there. On October 2012, because of severe pain, her legs had to be cut off. After recovering from the precipice between life and death numerous times, she published a book called ‘Shin Ho-Bin’s Calling out Me’ (published by Miraejihyang) last March with her writings from the past several years. This book contains her writings and her father’s efforts and thoughts from the last 10 years. After the book was published, she met various people but in her mind, her inability to finish university was the one thing that left an empty spot in her heart. She had a longing for the university life she could not enjoy in the past, first because of the hard studying from her freshmen year and secondly because of her illness. However, since the university moved from Hannam-dong in Seoul to Jukjeon-dong in Yongin city, she finally had a chance to visit the university again. “At first, I cried a lot and cursed the world. However, as I passed by death’s door many times, I started to think about how to live a real life with the rest of the time I have left. I want to write books and communicate with many others. Since the university I attended in the past is nearby, I really wanted to visit here. I am very happy to be here. It’s like my wish has come true. Not everyone will live a life like me, but I hope you do your best in your given life.” Even though she was so thin and weak due to her long fight against the illness and because she could only drink milk as she could not digest food, a smile did not leave her face. She remembered her day of admission clearly when she was having a conversation with her mentor. She was sending positive energy and hope to us by living her life with her best effort with a big bright smile. Her cheerful and bright voice brightened the surroundings when she took a commemorative picture with law school students and scholars after the university visit. ‘To be cured, you not only have to be honest, but you also need to sincerely admit the current situation without any prejudice. You need courage to face mistakes, stubbornness, anger and even pain. I could submit myself to that reality but when I thought of the way to not cry and strengthen myself against the difficult situations, I could not help but to smile because all I could think of was to endure as much as I could.”

Carrying on the honor of Korea’s first Special Education Department, special education students volunteered at the Disabled Welfare Center during summer vacation. A total of 22 Special Education students from the School of Teaching, including 7 candidates for elementary school teachers and 15 candidates for middle school teachers, have passed the Specialized Teacher Certification Test for 2013. A total of 34 students have successfully passed the test this year. The recent group of 22 students plus an additional 10 students who are employed at national public schools, as well as 2 who are employed at private schools have successfully passed the test this year. Since the Department of Education, Science and Technology has decided to increase the employment of specialized teachers to accommodate the annual increase of disabled students’ education last November, a total of 465 teachers (62 specialized teachers for youngsters, 131 elementary school specialized teachers, and 272 middle school specialized teachers) were selected with a high competency rate of 15 to 1 during the second half of 2013. The first ever Special Education department was founded in Korea in 1971 to educate specialized teachers who can manage students with special education needs due to disability. For the past few years, it acted as a leader in special education development producing numerous specialized teachers as well as teachers working in various education fields. Furthermore, it has been educating professional specialized teachers and special education experts to cultivate improved teachers by cooperating with the special education department of general graduate schools and graduate schools specialized in special education. Meanwhile, special education student volunteers visited ‘Haelim Center’, a disabled welfare center located in Bucheon for 3 nights and 4 days from July 16 to 19. Volunteering at the disabled welfare center is a traditional event of the Special Education department which has a history of more than 30 years of volunteering during every summer vacation. This event not only includes simple volunteering acts such as cleaning the facility or doing the laundry, but also helping disabled people to experience various activities with special programs carried out at different days and times. 50 students of the Special Education department designed group programs by splitting up to 12 groups of 4~5 members during this volunteering event. Disabled people were attracted to the programs like making hand cream, lip balm and sponge cake, folk dancing and nail art activities. An Yoo-Kyung, head of student affairs, who managed these volunteer activities said “Volunteering activities of the Special Education department are very meaningful, because you get to visit a disabled center in person and apply what you learned in your classes. Also, more and more students are joining the activity every year because it makes people feel a sense of accomplishment, because it allows them to develop and teach on their own.”

The Dankook University Soccer Team, Won Second Place in the 44th National Fall Games of the University Soccer League. Due to its team’s effort, it is now aiming to be the National League Champion On August 6, the final game of the 44th National Fall Games of the University Soccer League was held at Taebaek Sports Complex in Gangwon-do. In the blazing sunlight of the afternoon, the complex was being heated up with both universities’ athletes and cheering squads’ passion even before the game started between Dankook University and Soongsil University. Dankook University passed the preliminary league in first place with 2 wins and 1 defeat. Then, they went to the final round after defeating Hanmin University (2-0) in the Round of 32, Halla University (1-0) in the round of 16, Hanyang Univerisity (1-0) in the Quarter finals, and Ajou University (1-0) in Semi-finals. Their final opponent was Soongsil University who defeated Hongik University in the Semi-finals. Dankook University had played with strong defense, but they took second place because they allowed 2 goals to Soongsil University which led to the score of 2-0. This was their first chance to win the fall university league championship game in 32 years, since 1981, but again it had to postpone its championship crown to the next game as it took second place as in the1989 University Soccer League. Although they had to postpone their dream of a championship, their spirit of challenge and passion cannot be measured merely by the score. They may not be the strongest team that can easily win a championship any time, but, they have a passion that can never be measured by score alone. They are constantly doing their best and putting forth every effort to accomplish their goal of being crowned champions. In fact, the Dankook University soccer team has been more like an underdog in the past. Dankook University was the No.1 team in the University Soccer League when it was established in 1976. They were a finalist and a 4 time semi-finalist in the late 1990s. However, in the 21st century, they have not had such good results. They dared to be the top with a special spirit of challenge and passion that all Dankook people carry, however, they didn’t receive much attention as there were other universities with better teams. However, since 2009, the Dankook University soccer team started to make some progress. With its strong teamwork and defensive skills, they became a team that knows how to win. The Dankook University soccer team is entering a new period in its history, a period of winning. The team took second place in this fall’s university soccer league preceded by second place in the National University soccer game (2009) and 1st place in the 1st Korea Football Association U league. Director Shin Yeon-ho is the one that made this possible. Director Shin has taken his various experiences from his professional athletic career and during his 4 years of directing the Dankook soccer team, he has taken them to the top. To prepare for the upcoming matches, athletes are still focusing on their training regardless of this year’s terribly hot weather under the blazing sun. Also, they are catching up the classes that they missed during the semester due to game matches with an intensive study program, which was specially provided by the university for them during the vacation. The eyes of the director and the athletes, who are aiming for the national league championship, are shining as bright as the hot blazing sun in the sky with passion, even if they have to study and train simultaneously.

Develops World’s First Blue AMOLED Element with 30.1% Efficiency Proves Theory of Top Efficiency with Empirical Evidence Dedicated to Improving Consumption Power of OLED Products Professor Jun-Yeop Lee’s (Department of Polymer Science and Engineering) research team has succeeded in developing the world’s first element with a luminous efficiency rate over 30% from the blue element that is used for AMOLED, a widely applied display element for smart phones and devices. The efficiency rate proved to be 30.1% for the blue elements jointly developed by Professor Jun-Yeop Lee’s research team and Professor Chil-Won (an industry-university cooperative research professor), the highest efficiency rate that an OLED element can reach theoretically. This is especially significant for Professor Lee’s research team, since it proved the highest theoretical efficiency rate of OLED elements through experimentation for the first time globally. The results of this research have been posted on the internet breaking news edition of Advanced Materials, a world class academic journal in materials, last June 21 and was acknowledged for its accomplishments. Until now, although elements with efficiency rates over 20% in red and green elements of AMOLED were developed and have been applied to displays, blue elements were only showing around 10% efficiency causing increase in power consumption levels of machines applying AMOLED. To improve such problems, Professor Lee’s research team has been focusing on blue element development from year 2008. Starting with the development of blue elements with 18.4% efficiency in 2009, Lee’s team also succeeded in developing blue elements with 25.4% efficiency, which was the world’s highest efficiency record in the world at that time in 2011. The blue element developed in the recent study, boasting the world’s highest efficiency rate, is made from Indole Pyridine and is expected to significantly contribute to a decrease in power consumption of smart phone AMOLED displays, OLED TVs, and OLED lights. Also, this exclusively developed element is expected to bring domestic production of OLED materials and enhance the competitiveness of the domestic OLED industry. “This research sets a basis for the significant improvement in the increasing power consumption problem, which has been pointed out as a constant problem in OLED related machines, and [that he expects] it will contribute to future OLED market expansion,” commented Professor Lee.

Studying with Foreign Students on Campus during Vacation 100 Foreign Students and DKU Students in Attendance This is Dankook University during vacation… Contrary to expectations of an empty campus, Jukjeon Campus was filled with students even during the vacation. What catches one’s eye is the proportion of foreign students. Dressed appropriately for the hot Korean summer, they easily associated with each other and with Dankook University students on campus. These are foreign students from Dankook’s sister universities participating in the International Summer School (ISS) operated by Dankook University every summer. Dankook University’s ISS is quickly becoming the driver of the university’s internationalization. ISS, in its 5th year of operation, was held this year from June 24 to August 9, and about 1,000 students including 200 foreign students from sister universities participated. ISS is composed of English Village (an English conversation study program), the Academic Program (academic courses conducted entirely in English), and the Korean Culture Program. ISS is dedicated to building global networks by facilitating the improvement of foreign language skills and cultural exchange by giving students from around the world an environment within which they can associate and share with each other. ISS operates a total of four programs. English Village(EA) is an English language learning program in which university students from DKU’s sister universities in English-speaking countries teach Dankook students. This creates an opportunity for foreign students and DKU students to join each other in classes, meals, and excursions, using English in real-life situations and learning each other’s culture. EV runs for about three weeks and consists of groups of one foreign student and 3~5 DKU students meeting five days a week for two hours of daily classes. Academic Program is a four week academic lecture program conducted entirely in English and taught by professors from overseas sister universities. This program provides 3 hours of daily lectures four days a week and offers a good opportunity for DKU students preparing for overseas study to experience university lectures as they are given in other countries. Intensive Korean Language and Culture Program was developed to help foreign students learn Korean culture and Koran language over a period of about three weeks. International Summer Research Program is mainly conducted for undergraduates and graduate school students who wish to do research on various subjects participating in a research team. It is held for about nine weeks and is executed roughly from the end of June to the beginning of September.

'Main/Branch Campus System' to be changed to 'Dual Campus System' from academic year 2014 Increases global competitiveness with IT•CT in Jukjeon, BT in Cheonan For specialization, 14 new majors added in last 2 years, mainly for BT, humanities, social sciences ‘Drawing New Future of University Development’ Dankook University, Korea’s first 4-year private university which has pioneered models for development of Korea’s higher education by building Korea’s first regional branch campus in Cheonan and by moving the main campus out of central Seoul, has begun a new phase in advancement of its globalization and university competitiveness. Dankook University has been a catalyst in the development of balanced higher education in Korea spanning strong education from the Seoul metropolitan region to other Korean regions by operating its main and branch campuses. Now DKU prepares to implement a campus system that focuses on specialization beginning in 2014. This is the future of DKU, where resources are distributed effectively and capabilities are enhanced through the campus integration and specialization at Jukjeon and Cheonan. Dankook University will suggest a new model of mutual development by finding the strengths of each campus and its respective surrounding environment. One of the core development measures is to maintain balance between majors according to each campus’s specialty and not to simply restructure the university by cutting out less-popular majors and focusing only on the popular majors. Dankook University has been preparing for departmental mergers and abolitions since 2010 to obtain integration approval from the Korean Ministry of Education. While duplicate majors made up nearly 54% of majors previously, the university gradually reduced duplicate majors to 0% in a period of just 3 years. Through this, on June 27, 2013, Dankook University received final approval from the Ministry of Education to convert to the campus system starting in 2014. ‘Enhancing Competitiveness by Specializing Campuses’ ‘Jukjeon Specialized in IT/CT, Cheonan Specialized in Foreign Languages’ Dankook University has integrated its campuses in order to enhance the university’s competitiveness, focusing university competencies starting with specialization of both campuses. Dankook University will put its main administrative facilities in Jukjeon and enhance the global competitiveness of the university by specializing the education and research with IT and CT at Jukjeon Campus and BT and foreign languages at Cheonan Campus. Jukjeon Campus will mainly focus on humanities and social sciences, as well as IT software, applied engineering, and urban environmental architecture, all of which follow the university’s founding ideology, the university’s pursuit of the three Korean academic values of literature, history and philosophy and Dankook’s recent push in the fields of IT (Information and Technology) and CT (Cultural Contents). Cheonan Campus will focus on medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nano sciences and life sciences to lead the next generation in BT (Bio Technology), as well as on foreign languages to create a synergy effect from blending majors and to maximize the university’s global competitiveness by expanding practical education in foreign language. New Majors and Major Merge for Each Campus’ Subject Strength and Specialization Mergers and discontinuations of majors at both of Dankook University’s campuses subjective merge were decided according to the relative strength of the majors at each campus. In 2013, 8 departments in the fields of engineering, humanities and art at Cheonan Campus (Electrical Engineering, Applied Chemical Engineering, Multimedia Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Korean Language and Literature, History, Visual Communication Design, and Instrumental Music) merged with duplicate departments at Jukjeon Campus for its IT and CT specialization. Simultaneously, 4 departments in natural sciences at Jukjeon Campus (Chemistry, Food Science and Nutrition, Applied Physics, and Molecular Biology) and 2 foreign languages (Chinese Language and Literature and Japanese Language and Literature) merged with duplicate departments at Cheonan Campus for its BT and foreign language specialization. In 2014, Jukjeon Campus’ English Language and Literature will be merge with the same department at Cheonan Campus, and 4 undergraduate colleges (International Commerce, Business Administration, Computer Science and Engineering, Global Studies) will merge with similar colleges at Jukjeon Campus to complete its subjective integration. Dankook University will support campus specialization by newly establishing majors suitable for each campus’ respective competencies and designated specialization. In 2013, majors in Philosophy and Counseling were newly established at Jukjeon Campus while majors in Psychology, Marine Corps Military Science, International Sports Science, Biomedical Laboratory Science, Physical Therapy and Dental Hygiene majors were newly founded at Cheonan Campus. In 2014, British-American Studies will be added to the roster at Jukjeon Campus while Portuguese (Brazilian), Pharmaceutical Engineering, Display Engineering, Health Administration and Bio-Medical Medical Information Sciences will be added at Cheonan Campus. During the process of the mergers, Dankook University has decreased its freshman admissions by 85 students from 5,030 to 4,945. However, 14 new majors in humanities, social sciences, life sciences, etc., were established over the past 2 years reflecting on advice from industry and the current academic climate. 3 majors (Philosophy, Counseling, and British-American Studies) out of 14 new majors have been or are being added at Jukjeon Campus, while the other 11 majors have been or are being added at Cheonan Campus. BT related academic areas like Biomedical Laboratory Science, Physical Therapy, Dental Hygiene, Health Administration, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Bio-Medical Information Systems, etc., are reflective of Cheonan Campus’s specialty. Preparing for Additional Support for Enhancement of Major Competitiveness Constructing New Administration System to Support Specialization Dankook University is planning to increase each major’s competitiveness by supporting new majors and merged majors with additional finances and administrative support such as new scholarships. Also, DKU is providing various types of support like hiring new full-time faculty members to reinforce research and teaching, operating online video education and smart learning systems to provide educational convenience to students, expanding lecture exchange between campuses, increasing the number of shuttle buses coming on campus, and increasing lecture exchange for popular lectures. Dankook University now operates under a new administration system following the ‘Team and Commission System’ by overhauling the entire university administration and staff employment system from 2013 under the guidance of an external consultancy, leading to a new administrative support system suited to the needs of the recent campus integration. The university has not only merged its policy and planning functions for faster and more effective actions and decision-making, but it also has changed the main administration, college administrations and graduate school administration to team systems, simultaneously establish an effective task management system along with a university-wide customer service center. ‘Setting Long-Term Base for University Development’ Dankook University has prepared its long-term base for university development considering Korea’s eminent student population decrease and the need for augmentation of global competitiveness through the recent campus integration. Now, DKU has decreased wasted investment in major duplication and can effectively invest in financial, administrative and human resources. As a result, the university expects to greatly increase in competitiveness in research and education through expansions in cooperative and integrated research. Also, as the university enjoys better financial sustainability, DKU will ride the momentum of expanding investment as a multi-campus mega-university, creating synergies with external evaluation and financial support programs.

To be researching Leukemia with 60 million won for the following 2 years Hoping to become a world class expert in aging and cancer Sang-hyup Lee (1st semester, masters•doctoral degree program, age 25), a graduate student majoring in Molecule Amalgamation Science has been selected for the Global Ph.D Fellowship, a world class Ph.D support grant offered by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The Global Ph.D Fellowship is a support program of the National Research Foundation that helps students in doctoral degree programs or masters•doctoral degree programs to grow as the nation’s top minds with potential to bring renown to Korea in the future. The fellowship was first introduced in 2011, and this year a total of 200 fellows were selected. Sang-hyup Lee is the first among Dankook University students to be selected. He will be receiving a grant from the government providing a stipend of 2.5 million won every month for the following 2 years for a total of 60 million won. Also, he will receive various benefits such as access to help from counselors and scholars, as well as building relationship with researchers in related fields. We spoke with Lee, who mainly researches aging and cancer subjects. We’ve heard that you are the first to be selected as a Global Ph.D fellow among Dankook University students. How do you feel about that? I didn’t think I would be selected because the fellowship is usually offered to doctoral students only. However, since I had research results built up since my undergraduate years and because I had the support of my mentor professor, Eun-ju Kim, who helped with my up-to-date research patterns and research direction in related fields, I was able to apply with confidence. I am happy to be chosen, and I think I should execute my research with more responsibility. Also, I wish more DKU students could be selected for this program because it supports both domestic Ph.D students and combined masters•doctoral students. I’ve heard you have been writing SCI research papers since you were an undergraduate student. Is that true? I researched breast cancer cell aging. If you add a substance that can give stress to breast cancer cells, you will be able to see a process of cancer cell aging in the early stages. It is well-known that a protein named SIRT1 is active in this stage, but the fact that this protein is active when united with CBX8 was not known at all. I was the first to investigate and proclaim that the proteins SIRT1 and CBX8 interact in the aging of cancer cells. With my results, I published my research paper in Cancer Letters (IF: 4.238), a famous international academic journal on cancer. What is the secret of achieving good research results? I have a tendency to lose interest easily in everything. While thinking about my future career, I participated in the Undergradate Research Program (URP Program) operated by my major department in my 3rd year of undergraduate studies, and this field interested me a lot, making researching fun for me. From my undergraduate times, I headed a lab directly after class and focused on experiments. I think that led to the positive outcome. As a matter of fact, I am still repeating my daily life of coming to the lab at 9 am in the morning and going home after 11 pm. I think it is the same for every researcher, so I believe what they need is consistent interest and passion. What research are you currently working on? I am currently researching new interactivity of the two proteins CBX8 and SIRT1 in the initiation stage of Leukemia, as I thought they may function together in other types of cancer just as they did in the aging of breast cancer cells shown in my previous research. If I can find a new machanism of Leukemia initiation, I believe it will be a huge contribution to Leukemia treatment in the future. What is your future plan? First of all, I am planning to focus on my current research that I am working on with government support. Once I finish the Ph.D program, I am thinking of executing more professional research through a post-doc. My final goal is to become an expert who can stand beside the world famous scholars in my research field.
